Lunch

Today my Mom and Grandma dropped in for lunch. They were on their way down from Whidbey Island to my Aunt Andie’s house in Salem, Oregon. They were getting here around noon so I planned a lunch of Shrimp Quiche and Blueberry Coffee Cake for the three of us. The coffee cake is one I’ve been making for years but this was the first time I’ve tried the quiche recipe. I got it off the blog, Turkey Feathers. It really was as easy as she described, quite yummy too.

O Christmas Tree

On the 10th we went to a local tree farm to get our Christmas tree. This was the first year we’ve had a car to get a tree with (last year we had the car but spent the holidays on Whidbey visiting family). I was glad we had the car and didn’t have to walk to get the tree as it was pretty rainy and cold on the 10th. The tree farm was nice and it didn’t take us long to find the perfect tree.

No matter how we get our tree home we amuse folks. Once when we carried a tree home from the store a fellow walking by asked “if we were taking our tree for a walk” and the tree farm we used when we lived near Evergreen always remembered us, amazed we would use a radio flyer wagon to take our tree home.

This year was no exception. The tree lot was filled with SUV’s and pickups. Putting our good sized tree into the back of the bug made the farm workers all grin and shake their heads. It is pretty amazing how much Dory can hold.

We had to wait for the tree to dry off before decorating it, gave us plenty of time to dig through the closet to get all the decorations out. It’s always fun looking at all the old decorations. This year I was surprised by the glass ball ornaments. I had gotten them for last year but then we didn’t have a tree so they were never even opened and I had forgotten all about them. They looked really neat, especially when a light was right behind them.

Santa Cupcakes

Today is the feast day for Saint Nicholas, aka Santa Claus. To celebrate I made Santa Cupcakes.

They turned out cute and yummy, though Ryan did not like the red hot nose. Wish I could have got a photo of when he bit into the red hot, probably should have warned him. Lol!

Cake decorating is definitely not my forte, but it was fun. Fun and messy. I’m not sure how I managed it but I got frosting all over the counter– not just where I was working!

Colder and more snow

More snow fell last night and it is colder today. Our road is a sheet of ice. The snow yesterday melted and left everything wet to freeze last night. Forecast today is for cold temperatures and maybe even more snow. It’s supposed to be cold tomorrow too, but no more snow. It might actually stick around today and tomorrow but then we’re looking at rain.

More snow

It snowed more last night and this morning. We didn’t get much more than the last snowfall (which was already gone). Today the snow melted off again except for a few patches here and there. It was colder today, though, so the snow drifted around more. It’s supposed to be colder and snow more tonight, with a possible 1 to 3 inches of accumulation. We’ll see.

The garlic even got a little dusting of snow today.

With the exception of the garlic the garden is pretty much done. There’s a few small kale plants and some spinach and broccoli which never did anything. The garlic is supposed to winter over. According to the growing tips we have “The plants may suffer frost or freeze damage, but will survive the weather.” Then in March they should start growing more and be ready to harvest in June.

First Snow 2006

We got up this morning to our first snow (slush) of the year. It’s raining now and I expect it’ll all be gone soon. According to the current forecast, though, we should be seeing some more snow later today or tonight and tomorrow. Possibly a couple inches. But then it’ll be raining and warmer so it’s not going to stick around.
