Happy Birthday McCoy!

Hard to believe that our boy is 5 years old. It seems like it was just yesterday that he was a pup too tiny to jump up onto the couch.

And now he’s a big 50+lb boy!

To celebrate his turning 5, he and Poppy Seed both got new bones to chew on and McCoy will have a yummy treat tonight. This morning both dogs are sufferring from the grass is always greener syndrome. They want the bone the other one has, lots of sneaky bone stealing going on.

Garden update

Yesterday I transplanted the watermelon but discovered that the cucumber hadn’t dealt with the colder temperatures. It wasn’t looking to good yesterday and last night it got even colder. I think we’ll have to start over with the cucumber.

Other than that loss the rest of the garden is growing well. We have a bunch of carrots up now. If the temperatures will just warm back up it might turn out okay.

Transplants

This afternoon I transplanted out the Thai Pink Egg tomatoes, the Patio Orange tomato and the Lemon Cucumber.

The Thai Pink Egg tomatoes are on the end – this is the same place we grew them our first year but this time with better support. In addition to the cages I’ve strung lines across each cage to provide additional support.

The Lemon Cucumber and Patio Orange tomato share the front box. I’ve added the cross ties there too.
[thumb:179:c][newline]
The next box has the swiss chard from last year. At least part of that box will be replaced with the watermelon when it gets a little further along. The box beside that one has the lettuce (and carrots if they ever come up).

In the back against the wall is the last box with the new swiss chard, spinach, arugula and peas. Unfortunately the box has been attacked several times back the squirrels. We’re talking about buildin some sort of a cage over the box to protect the plants.

Aside from the vegetables we also have nasturtiums doing well and marigolds. I’ve planted seeds for several varieties of basil and oregano. With a bit of luck this could be a very good year for our little garden.

Garden update

The pesky squirrel attacked our container again yesterday. It did more damage this time. Mainly the squirrels are digging in the dirt but in the process they’ve damaged some of the plants. It doesn’t look like they’re going after the plants at all.

Everything is growing well in the small pots but I’ll probably transplant them this weekend into the Earthboxes. I still have some larger pots that need to be planted so I’ll probably do that too. I haven’t started the herbs yet but I should get them going too.

This morning I noticed that more of the lettuce has sprouted and is coming up.

Transplants in the Sun

The porch garden is coming along. Yesterday I made lasanga using some of the swiss chard still growing from last year. I also transplanted the lettuce outside. [thumb:175:l] In the same box I’ve started some additional lettuce seeds and the carrots.

The lemon cucumber, Thai pink egg tomato, patio orange tomato and nasturtiums all had some time out in the sun today.

Our first transplants of arugula, spinach, swiss chard and peas seem to be recovering from the cold. I’ve also started another pea plant.

Indoors, I’ve got a second Thai pink egg tomato planted and the watermelon. Hopefully both will grow. Plus I transplanted the marigold and started some more seeds. I’ll bring the more sensitive plants inside for awhile longer until the nights warm up more. Then I’ll transfer them out to the Earthboxes.
