Sprout news

The latest sprout news is in. The lettuce and arugula are doing well. Both Little Marvel Peas are showing and now the first of the Rainbow Swiss Chard is coming up. This weekend I’ll probably start more seeds. I’ve got the flowers to get started at least. I’ll probably start the watermelon and lemon cucumbers as well. they can grow inside for awhile before I transplant them out.

Our first seeds have sprouted. The Tom Thumb Lettuce and Arugula are coming up. Two of three for each plant. In a couple weeks they may be ready to go outside. Hopefully the weather will start improving. Lately it has been cool and rainy.

Hopefully the other plants will be coming up soon.

Seeds started

[thumb:162:l:s=1] I’ve started our first seeds of the new season.

The first container has Tom Thumb Lettuce (x3), Ground Cherry, Patio Orange Tomato, and Thai Pink Egg Tomato. I’ll be starting more lettuce, two weeks apart, to stagger those plantings. I want to give the plants a good start indoors this year. Last year I tried to start them outside and it was cool – they didn’t do as well.

The second has Rainbow Swiss Chard (x4) and Little Marvel Peas (x2). We still have chard from last year I’ll end up taking out but not until I have to transplant the new plants into the Earthbox. I’d leave it except it is in the way with everything we’re trying to fit in the boxes.

The third container has Spinach (x3) and Arugula (x3). Neither did all that well last year. Maybe starting them inside this year will turn out better. If not I can find something else to plant in that spot.

There are still more things to start – but not quite this early. I also need to get another cage for the ground cherry. Again, assuming it grows since we didn’t have any luck last year. It just looks so interesting that I wanted to try again.

Seeds!

Our seeds from Baker Creek Heirloom Seed Co came yesterday.

I don’t think I’ll be planting the cucumbers, but I could change my mind. Along with these plants we’ll be adding seeds from the previous years including lettuce, carrots, spinach, and many others. Over the next week or so I hope to finish our planting plans and charts. We have limited space but I’d like to do as much as we’re able to with what we have.

Photo Gallery

I’ve added a Photo Gallery to the new site. I have a bunch of photos to upload, but here are a a couple from our first porch garden.
[thumb:2:l][thumb:1:r]Back from 2004 our Earthboxes first arrived and we started our seeds in the window. Those are Thai Pink Egg tomatoes coming up. The new gallery should make it easier to add photos and post them with various options in our blog.
