I’ve been working on the plan for the 2005 Porch Garden. This year we’re changing the layout and mix of plants. This morning I ordered seeds from the good folks over at Baker Creek. Our Earthboxes this year will have more tomatoes, salad greens, herbs and even some flowers. We’re switching to Whitney Farms organic plant foods as well. It’ll be interesting. The seeds will be started soon.
WordPress Upgrade
This morning I upgraded the site to WordPress 1.5. The new version offers several significant enhancements including themes and page managment. I’ve migrated everything over. Now I just need to think about some new theme designs to add.
Shorter walk
Yesterday we went out for another walk. Since we were both tired from the 8.5 mile walk on Saturday we only went 4.5 miles and then caught the bus back home. Actually, from the stop to home is about .5 mile so we really walked about 5 miles yesterday.
A good morning walk
It was very early when we left this morning, drizzling, and a Saturday. That meant it was dark and there was almost no traffic on the roads. I took some photos which turned out very dark. Playing around I discovered gThumbs’ “enhance” feature which is pretty cool. It’s like turning on night vision after the fact.
Here’s the empty dark street before and after the enhancement:
The walk was fine. For the most part we walked through a drizzle or mist. Gradually the sun came up but you couldn’t see it through the clouds – everything just became brighter. At one point we heard this noise that at first we took to be the sound of the rain coming harder as we walked up a hill. But that wasn’t the case because it wasn’t raining harder. It turned out to be power lines:
I guess I haven’t been around high-power lines before but I was surprised at the sizzling, hissing, loud noise the lines made. I can’t imagine living near them.
At one point in the walk there were llamas but the image didn’t come out well. We ended up completing the walk much faster than I anticipated so I was early to the meeting but that was fine.
Early walk
This morning we’re walking 8.5 miles to Tumwater. I have a meeting at the library’s business office so we’re going to walk out there. I’ll try to get some pictures on the way. Oddly enough it was this walk that got me thinking about doing the marathon in the first place. It feels good to be at this point knowing that we’ve been walking quite a lot. With today’s walk I’ll have done 114 miles since I started tracking just over a month ago. Our first long walk was January 10th, 5.5 miles, and at the time that wore us out. We’ve made a lot of progress since then.
10.5 miles
Today we walked 10.5 miles! Our walking has been going very well. It was still a bit foggy this morning on the lake at the start of the trail.
A bit further up the path on the other part of the lake we startled some ducks.
All in all it was a good walk. We’re tired now but it feels good. We also managed to walk this distance at a much better pace than the last long walk.
