Marathon Trails

We’ve been walking out on the Chehalis-Western trail near here for our long walks.

Chehalis-Western Trail
The trail provides a nice place to walk with markers ever 1/2 mile.

This weekend we should be walking 10.5 miles, assuming we add another mile onto our long walk. Soon we’ll be starting a training plan for the marathon itself. We’re both getting in better shape. Each week our pace on the long walk has improved without any focus on going faster. We’re just getting stronger and developing more endurance. We’re both looking forward to the marathon in May.

2005 Porch Garden

After last year’s porch garden we’re doing some things differently this year. To start off with we’re going to use a different arrangement:

2005 Porch Garden Layout

With this setup we have all five boxes along the front side of the porch so that they have more access to sunlight. We’ll go out the side of the porch instead of straight out. I already moved the boxes so that the dogs would learn to go out the side now instead of later when there are plants. They’ve picked it up pretty fast that we don’t want them jumping over the boxes. Poppy was disappointed, she likes jumping.

There’s still work to do. The old fertilizer strip needs to be taken out. New soil needs to be added as well as organic fertilizers. We need to finalize what we’re going to plant this year and get the seeds ordered. We will be planting tomatoes but this year we’re going to add cages to help contain the plants. Aside from that we’ll be planting herbs and some flowers. The rest still needs to be decided. Last year we started the seeds about a week into March. I might wait a little longer this year because it was still pretty cool when we transplanted the seedlings.

Switched to WordPress

We’ve switched to WordPress. All part of my plan to keep the blog updated more often. Right now there are just a few styles available but I hope to add some custom styles before long featuring our dogs, gardening efforts, etc. All of the posts from the old blog have been imported but I’ll have to go through manually and update the image links in order to get those back. That’ll take some time. Otherwise it seems to be working well.

Update 08:29 AM:
I’ve fixed the old image links and added a new plugin that allows us to post images that display a thumbnail linked to the larger image.

Worms

Our worm bin received a fresh batch of bedding today. It has been getting too wet so I added a bunch of shredded paper. I think I need to spend more time checking on the worms. I’ve added a weekly to do item to my list so that I stay more on top of how they’re doing. The bin is kept semi-outside in our storage closet. It probably doesn’t get too cold in there but it is obviously colder than the worms would probably like. I don’t think they’re eating much right now. Still, there seemed to be plenty of worms and coccoons so I think they’ll be fine. They’ve been out there for awhile now so I think it’ll be okay.

Marathon plans

We’re planning to walk the Capital City Marathon in Olympia, Washington this year. We’ve never walked so far before. Since we don’t own a car we do walk quite a bit anyway. Even so we’re going to be training for this much longer distance. Yesterday we did our first long walk of the training, 5.5 miles. Over the next few weeks we will be increasing the distance that we are walking. It’ll be fun!

Biodiesel

In the future I’d like to have an electric vehicle, or a hybrid biodiesel/electric. Right now we’re planning to get our first car – ever – and there is a lot to learn. Up until now we’ve managed by walking or using public transportation. Once in a great while we’ve rented a car for a vacation or a truck for moving. I’ve driven a variety of cars, trucks and vans for work but that has been infrequent as well. Last year for about four months I drove a van daily between two work sites but I still walked to the first site to pick up the van and then walked home after I returned it. At the moment we are close enough to my job that walking is a reasonable alternative.

Later this year, however, we’re planning to buy a house with a little land – one to five acres. Given the housing prices around here our initial homestead is likely to be too far to walk or ride a bike. If that is the case we’re going to need a car. But I’ve been thinking of going with a diesel vehicle and using biodiesel. Ideally we’d end up making our own at home. There are challenges to this plan. Many of the vehicles are either a) older and prone to problems, or b) newer and more expensive than I would like to spend. I’m not sure which way we’ll go. I may end up going for an inexpensive gas car with good gas mileage that I can later convert to an electric vehicle.
